What “verified” needs to mean

A useful conference check specifies the claim, edition, source and check date. A label such as “verified academic conference” is incomplete unless the reader can see what was checked and what remains uncertain. This article is a verification guide, not a certification of every event listed in a directory.

An institutional name or an academic-looking domain can help you locate a source, but it cannot establish every claim on an event page. A private organiser is not automatically unsafe, and a university-associated event is not automatically suitable for your paper, funding or appraisal requirements.

Start at the official host

Confirm that the host institution or organising body acknowledges the current edition. Compare the title, dates, location and submission route. Examine the programme, committee and review arrangements. When an institutional relationship is important, use that institution’s official notice or department page instead of relying only on a logo displayed by another site.

Look for a clear fee schedule, cancellation policy and contact route. If a programme is still being developed, record that status and ask when it will be available. Missing information is an unresolved item; it is not automatically proof of deception.

Separate event participation from publication

Check exactly what is submitted: an abstract, a full paper, a poster or a presentation proposal. Find the stated review process and the publication conditions. A certificate does not prove proceedings publication, and proceedings publication does not by itself prove database indexing.

For a claimed indexed output, match the publisher, source title or identifier, edition and coverage period. An older volume can establish a historical output while leaving the current edition unresolved. Use Think. Check. Attend. to structure questions rather than assigning a universal pass score.

Ask your institution about eligibility

Your university, funder or employer determines the applicable reimbursement, degree and appraisal requirements. Obtain the current policy rather than relying on an internet claim that an event automatically earns points or meets a national requirement. Journal-list claims also need a dated policy source; do not treat an old list reference as current permission.

Illustrative example: your department requires prior approval for travel and a reviewed full-paper presentation. A workshop certificate may be valuable but does not establish that requirement. Save the department’s rule, the event’s submission instructions and the approval separately.

Explore ScholarVault with the same evidence standard

ScholarVault connects research, academia, technology, innovation, business, community and events. Our India conference guide includes links to ScholarVault conference sites and explains what still needs checking. Organiser affiliation is disclosed; it is not presented as independent certification.

Read the SCVS methodology for assessment limits and use the evidence sheet to record the outcome. This guide does not promise hundreds of automated checks, a fixed audit time or that manual source review is unnecessary.
